This remarkably contemporary design was woven around 1582 – 435 years ago for Sultan Murad III’s daughter Ayse.  This fabric in our collection is finer and lighter – more suitable for summer.  The background colour is a hazy sky powder blue featuring metallic silver cintemani (leopard) spots – a pattern that is very symbolic of the Ottoman period and originally came from China/Mongolia.  The original kaftan is stored at Topkapi Palace Istanbul ref 13/198.
