Outside of Turkey will sell fabric only for a variety of reasons – for interiors, period costumes, evening wear, bespoke clothing – but here is one we hadn’t done before.
Our client was ordained at the Vatican in Ottoman Silks which is so wonderful to see. The relationship between the Ottoman traders and the Venetians was very strong during the 15th and 16th centuries. Between them they controlled the trade of silk from Istanbul through Venice to Europe and beyond making Venice, Genoa and the Ottomans very rich indeed.September 21, 2017
This season’s Arts of the Islamic World sale at Sotheby’s London was led by an exceptional Ottoman voided silk velvet and metal-thread panel (çatma), with çintamani and tiger-stripe design from the collection of Argine Benaki Salvago which sold for £1,076,750 (original estimate £300,000 -£600,000), marking a record price for an Ottoman textile at auction. Her entire collection, comprising eight Ottoman textiles and objects as well as Greek textiles sold for a total of £2,361,954.

Silk scarves in Ottoman designs – hand woven in Bursa, Turkey
Last September we drove to Bursa to meet a silk hand weaver who has created the most beautiful scarves in Ottoman designs. Not only do they originate from the very heart of the silk industry in Turkey but are of such fine quality that we are delighted to add his designs to our Collection. Welcome to Ottoman Silks – the first collection of Ottoman designs, jacquard woven in silk for over 400 years!
Launched at the British Embassy, Ankara in the summer 2013, Ottoman Silks is proud to introduce this range in partnership with Persan.
We will introduce the collection to Istanbul at the IWI Christmas Festival on 8th December at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Istanbul and our collection will increasingly be found in upmarket establishments across Turkey.
