Tastefully resembling the fine textiles from a bygone Empire, Ottoman Silks is jacquard woven using modern techniques to produce a collection that is modern and wearable today.
Our very fine cloth is achievable thanks to the experience of Turkey's leading textile house, Persan, who have embraced our commission enthusiastically and with such professionalism. Their ability to create such luxurious fabric is down to them and we are delighted to have received so many positive comments from historical experts to current fashion 'royalty'.
We are also fortunate to have the experience or our master tailor and kalip tasarimci (pattern designer) Selim Ilhaner. From the age of 8 Selim spent half a day at school and the remaining half, learning the trade in Mardin – one of Turkey's most beautiful southern cities near the boarder with Syria. With 40 years behind him in the trade, Selim brings immeasurable experience and endless useful contacts that have enabled us to progress with this project. On Thursday 18th April, 2013 we delivered our first three hundred metres of Ottoman Silk to Selim Bey's workshop in Turkey's capital city, Ankara. In great Turkish tradition, we threw gold on the cloth and he cut our first pattern. The first of many we hope!
Selim loves working with fine silk and is as determined as we are to ensure his workshop produces a very high standard of tailoring and that all the details we insisted on for our prototypes will be consistent throughout. Details like fine inside pockets inside every kaftan, hand-made covered buttons, hand-stitched lining, proper working pockets and fabric patterns that are matched up along the seams.
Our collection is all about emulating the opulence of the Ottoman era. We produce only fine quality products that are all made in Turkey by Turkish craftsmen and women.
